Similaries Between Aeneid and Iliad Essay - 482 Words
Virgilââ¬â¢s Aeneid, tells the story of the founding of Rome. It follows the last of the Trojanââ¬â¢s who escaped the fate of Troy. Troy eventually falls following Homerââ¬â¢s The Iliad, and Virgil continues the story of their people. The Trojans are not, however, the only similarity between the two books. Virgil employs many of the same image patterns that Homer uses in The Iliad. The symbolism of fire, shields, and gates are used in both epic poems. nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;Fire is used frequently in The Iliad, but Virgil utilizes this image in his poem as well. Fire symbolizes both destruction and desire in Virgilââ¬â¢s poem, much like it did in The Iliad. In Book II, Aeneas uses the image of flames to describe the fate of Troy. ââ¬Å"But now theâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Fire is not only used to show destruction but to describe human emotions. A fire ignites in Didoââ¬â¢s heart when she falls in love with Aeneas. Similarly, Homer describes Achillesââ¬â¢ anger as a raging flame. nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;The symbolism of gates is used in both poems as well. In book IX of The Aeneid, the Trojans seek shelter from the Latin troops during an attack. Aeneas was not at the Trojan camp when the battle takes place however, he gives orders before he left to stay behind the gates of the fortress. He knows that if his troops were to remain behind the gates, they would be safe. Likewise, in The Iliad, the Trojans seeks shelter and protection behind the Skaian Gates. Hector, like Aeneas knows that the gates their people built are their best form of protection against the enemy. nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;The final symbolism apparent in both poems is the image of the shield. In both poems, the primary hero is given a shield made by a god to protection them in battle. In The Aeneid, Aeneas is given a shield made by Vulcan. The shield tells the future of Rome. Shown are all the victories of war and the height that Rome will achieve. Much like Aeneas, Achilles is given a shield made by the Greek god Hephaestus. The shield, unlike Aeneasââ¬â¢s, does not show the height of the Achaeans, but it shows the life of Achaeans beyond the battles. nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;Virgil imitates Homer with The Aeneid;

The Fourth Extinction An Unnatural History By Elizabeth...
There have been five major mass extinction on earth triggered by a distinguishable event, but in The Sixth Extinction: An Unnatural History, Elizabeth Kolbert writes of the narrative of the sixth extinction caused directly by human impact. The book identifies the effects of human activity on how, over humans history on earth, the natural world has been affected. Every environmental impact stems into three basic groups of global problems to nature: Pollution, Habitat loss and Invasive Species. Kolbert explains that each impact can be traced back to one source, human industrial development. With each impact various types of life in the natural world are affected. Deforestation, urbanization, and sea level rise contribute to habitat loss worldwide. When humans began to travel they also brought invasive species and disease along with them; as boats only became bigger more and more invasive species travel. This reverse engineering of the planet species, brings new species that donâ â¬â¢t have any natural predators, thus having an easier time driving native species out to endangerment or extinction. The different outcomes that come from human pollution is separated throughout the book, but the idea remains constant; with the development of human culture, pollution has drastically impacted a vast extent of species habitats and their environment. Humans pollution of greenhouse gases causes an overall rise in global temperatures. Managing and Organizations
Question: Write a reflective essaywhich details how one of the Rational Goal Management Competencies has been experienced in the workplace. Answer: This particular essay has provided a detailed understanding about the importance and competence of management in order to run an organization successfully. In this particular context, I would like to present a real scenario of an organizational context. Based on the particular scenario I would like to share my personal observation including the findings, which I have gathered from my own observation. XYZ is one of the largest retail companies occupying a predominant place in various multinational countries. As per the managerial concept and beliefs, this particular organization likes to believe in implementing diversity at the workplace (Jain 2015). Diversity management believes that people of various culture and attitude are allowed to work inside the workplace. I have personally observed that employees of different culture could not adjust with each others beliefs and faith. As a result, various barriers take place in between the employees at the workplace. Among different kinds of barriers and challenges among the employees linguistic barriers and psychological barriers are most prominent. I have experienced the struggle of Francis that he had to face after getting the job in the XYZ Company. Following the ethics of diversity management, the human resource managers have decided to recruit the people from various cultures in order to explore unity in diversity. Francis is one of those employees who actually belong from Syria. Therefore, this particular individual had to face immense struggle in order to adjust with the work environment properly. Due to the linguistic barrier, Francis did not interact with the leaders properly (Lacaze and Bauer 2014). On the other hand, leaders as well failed to fulfill the demand of the employee like Francis. In this kind of situation, management competency has to play a major role to deal with the employees problems at the workplace. In order to overcome linguistic barrier at the workplace, the management decides to provide an effective training and guidance to Francis for enhancing his communication skill. Effective communication would definitely help Francis to maintain a strong communication with the employees as well as with the leaders. As a result, it would be easier for him to share any kind of problems with the managers regarding the job profile at the workplace. After enhancing the communication skill Francis would be able to express his point of regarding the business goal (Litchfield, Ford and Gentry 2014). I have observed that participative leadership style has been strictly maintained at the workplace. With the help of participative leadership style, the managers provide immense opportunity to the employees for exposing their point of views. As a result, XYZ organization is able to make a collective decision for the betterment of business. However, Francis is not able to take part in the decision mak ing process actively due to his linguistic barrier. After providing an effective training and guidance, he would be able to make an effective interaction with his colleagues or with his leaders. Consequently, it would be better for the progress of the organization ultimately to reach the target market. It is undeniable that the structure of management of XYZ organization is competent enough to keep a constant control over the entire process of business. Despite its competency, I would like to point out some of the recommendations based on which the company can provide a better service to the employees for achieving the business goal. As per the scenario, I have observed that the managers have only concentrated on the development of Francis. In order to build his communication skill the managers have decided to provide him an effective training. Apart from that, the competence of management should instruct every employee for maintaining an effective communication with each other. People of different culture and background should be treated with equal respect and dignity. As a result, the employee like Francis would not feel hesitate to share his problem at the workplace (Srica 2014). Apart from Francis, other employees have to be concerned about this particular matter. It is the maj or responsibility of the management to maintain this unity among the employees within the organization. This particular study has provided a detailed overview about the impact of management competency and skill within an organization for running an entire business process successfully. I have highlighted a practical scenario in this regard. Highlighting the story of Francis I have tried to point out the initiative as well as the competence of management for the development of employee skill. At the same time, I have intended to provide some necessary recommendations as well based on which this organization can easily maintain an effective relation with the workers.
